PART 1, SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS

1. What relationships exist between fire and earth? (name 2)
Fire is mother of earth, earth is child of fire – sheng cycle
The qi moves around the ziwu cycle from earth (spleen 9-11am) to fire (heart 11-1pm)
2. How do yin and yang relate to each other? (name 3 ways)
Oppose but depend on each other for definition
Consume each other
Transform into each other
3. What is yuan qi? (NOT how is it produced)
Source/original qi. Jing-essence in the form of qi.
Constitutional inherited qi, associated with the kidneys, transported via the san jiao.
4. Taiyang is one of the six divisions. Which two organs are involved and which other parts of the body (not organs) can it relate to? (name 1 part)
Bladder & Small Intestine.
Relates to the back, especially the upper back and shoulders, and the spinal area from the neck down to the sacrum.
5. What is the yi (purpose, intent)?
The shen (spirit) of the spleen.
The intention or focusing of the awareness of the doctor in practice. The synthesis of the intuition with knowledge.
6. What are the main functions of the pericardium? (name 2)
Communicates as minister between the heart as emperor and the rest of the body.
Protects the heart from external pathogens.
Connects with the liver as jueyin.
Connects with the san jiao for the communication of ministerial fire between the heart and the kidneys.

Speed, depth, regularity and force.

10. Why is the yangming said to close? (give 1 reason)
It is full of qi and blood and prone to heat, so is yang, but is on the front of the body, which is yin. The yang allows the rotting and ripening of food and fluids for the spleen to transform and transport, which is a concentrating or closing action.
11. What are the main functions of the gallbladder? (name 2)
Controls the smooth flow (free coursing) of qi.
Stores the bile.
12. What is a normal pulse in terms of speed?
Between 60 & 90 for an adult, although 80+ already indicates slightly fast.
13. What characteristics of a balanced water might you see in a person? (name 4)
Creative, thinks a lot about things, deep, interesting
14. What are the key organs concerned with qi production in the body? (name 4)
Stomach rots & ripens food
Spleen creates gu qi from that.
Lungs create da qi from air
Kidney yuan qi supports all qi hua (transformations)
15. What are the characteristics of the second great circuit (name 2).
Consolidation. The heart and kidney form the shaoyin axis which is the central strength of the interior of the body.
Defense. The SI & Bladder form the taiyang, which protects the exterior from external pathogens.
